In this episode, we take a deep dive into HOW TO STOP QUITTING ON YOURSELF when getting to your goal is taking longer then you think it should (or longer then you wanted!)

And why it matters so much to BE PATIENT vs impatient.

You’ll hear real-life examples from my amazing client Erica.

After struggling with weight and food for DECADES, she arrived at exactly her goal weight.

Society teaches us to think of our goals and ‘achievement’ in a very limited binary way, either SUCCEEDED -OR- FAILED.

And this socialization goes deep, we've most definitely been programmed to think this way. Not only that, but our brain also defaults to whatever the most ‘efficient’ way of thinking about things, so it LOVED putting things into ‘easy’, quick categories.

Here’s what ALL of this means for YOU and YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GOAL:

It can be SO EASY to feel like a failure.
It can be SO EASY to feel like you’ve failed and to feel shame and deeply flawed.

→ Then when you’re feeling like you just can’t seem to lose the weight you want to lose and/or it’s taking too damn long- ALL OF THESE THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS ARE WHAT LEAD TO QUITTING AND SABOTAGE.

The quitting and the sabotage, then lead to stuckness and struggle

THIS IS WHY IT IS SO INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT to be onto yourself for any binary assessment, evaluation or judgment of your results.

I see this all. the. time. (and I experienced it myself for 2 decades!)

Someone will have a goal of losing 35 pounds-
and then proceed to lose 28 of those 35 pounds in 6 months (that’s more than a pound per week!) BUT THEN feel like a FAILURE for ‘not getting to my goal’.

The craziest part is THIS:
Because that person is feeling like a failure… they will start to tell themselves that ‘it’s not working’ (although it is!) and then STOP doing what IS working.
Start going back to the habits that create weight gain.

ALL BECAUSE THEY ARE JUDGING THEIR MEASURABLE RESULTS IN A BINARY WAY.

THE SOLUTION? 
NON-BINARY SUCCESS EVALUATION.

You have to CHOOSE TO SEE what IS working, what you ARE doing.

You have to CHOOSE TO SEE (and celebrate!) the results and changes you HAVE created.

You have to teach your brain to STOP making your success BINARY.

Meaning: STOP thinking about yourself and your goals in a way that if you don’t hit your exact goal  in the exact timeline that you had in mind ---> then you think of yourself as a failure, and you think of yourself as ‘having failed’.

The reason that I am able to CONTINUE every year creating breakthrough after breakthrough is because I REFUSE TO EVALUATE MY RESULTS IN A LIMITED BINARY WAY.

THIS mindset is exactly what allowed me to put an END to my weight struggle, and have breakthroughs ALL the way to the results I was wanting- NO MATTER HOW LONG I HAD STRUGGLED- and no matter how much learning and de-conditioning of habits and behaviors had to happen along the way.

The reason I'm always able to EXPAND MY ABILITIES, MY CAPACITY and MY RESULTS (with any goal, but including my weight goal) is this:

- I don’t set expiration dates on my goals.

I absolutely set dates, and I have timelines for my goals… BUT *IF I don’t ‘hit it’ by the time I thought that I would, I don’t make it mean it’s not possible or that I’m not capable - instead I CHOOSE TO FEEL PROUD for ALL THE NON-BINARY SUCCESS up to this point thus far.

I REFUSE TO EVALUATE MY MEASURABLE RESULTS in a LIMITED BINARY WAY

→ I LOOK AT ALL I'VE DONE. All I've learned. All the NEW AWARENESS I have. and so much more.

AND* (VERY IMPORTANT) I ALSO - without judgment - look at the areas where there is continued opportunity for growth, learning, further development of specific skills, and further growth in my belief.

I am willing to be curious about ANY limiting beliefs or ways of thinking I may still hold, that are potentially getting in the way. (so I can weed those suckers out!)

The most ironic thing of all- ESPECIALLY with weight loss goals…
Is that when you think about or evaluate your results in a BINARY way, that only keeps you feeling like sh*t.

Especially if you’ve had patterns of emotional eating, the more we feel like shit about ourselves- the more we feel like a ‘failure’ → the more we emotionally eat and sabotage.

NON-BINARY SUCCESS is where it’s at.

THIS approach will keep you moving IN the direction of your exact goal AND experiencing ongoing new breakthroughs in your results in a way that FEELING LIKE A FAILURE- NEVER HAS AND NEVER WILL.

Today I'm sharing with you my EASY & JOYFUL maintenance philosophy (even if you're not 'at your goal' yet, this episode is a must listen!)

I’m tackling the topic of MAINTENANCE and ‘maintaining results’ from a refreshingly new lens.

One of the most frequent questions that I get is this:
‘Brenda I know how to LOSE weight, but what I struggle with is maintenance and maintaining those results, help!’

I’m telling you now… you might have to listen 2x to this one. And you’re really gonna have to listen with an open mind.

Because THIS WAY OF THINKING ABOUT MAINTENANCE is SO different, then the ideas that we’ve been previously fed by diet-culture on the topic of 'maintenance'.

I mean, seriously.

It’s gonna be a breath of fresh air.

And may I remind you that I have maintained an 80 pounds weight loss for YEARS NOW….

→ through wedding planning, adapting to the changes of marriage, honeymoon, many vacations, travel, becoming a new mom and navigating the newness of motherhood -- leaving my job to start my own business (which was f-ing scary and emotional btw!) -- growing and scaling that said business to 7-figures, navigating a global pandemic --- and more.

I'M ABLE TO ONGOING MAINTAIN THIS 80 POUND WEIGHT LOSS WITH EASE, AND JOY, AND LOVE as I am LIVING a full, amazing (sometimes-challenging!) life.

I’ve also coached 100’s of women who had once struggled with their weight for DECADES, and who now ALSO maintain their results with ease and joy and love.

Clients like Risa, and Monica, and Caroline… (just to name a few) going on 4+ years of having gone through the program and TO THIS DAY are maintaining and enjoying AND LOVING their results.

Keep ALL of this in mind as you listen.

On this week’s podcast we are going D-E-E-P.

We’re taking things to a ‘next-level’ in a way that helps you to understand WHY you do the things you do, especially those food-related decisions that feel the MOST baffling, frustrating and confusing to you.

I bet you NEVER thought that your weight struggle had anything to do with ‘control’ and/or uncertainty (or maybe you had a hunch!). Regardless, in this 2-part series, I break this WAYYY down so that you’re able to understand your food related choices with clarity and ease.

It’s not something that gets talked about much. But it’s important!

Today I'm introducing you to the KRYPTONITE that will weaken and destroy any emotional overeating and sabotaging habits. :boom::no_entry_sign:

Millions of women around the world internally struggle with emotional over-eating and sabotage (sometimes, even D-A-I-L-Y !)

My mission is to get you equipped with EVERYTHING you're needing in order to create the habits and results that you've been wanting, but struggling to create.

Ok, so here’s how it goes down:
You set a goal. You say to yourself: 'ok, this is really it!'.
You say to yourself you're NOT gonna overeat, you're NOT gonna sabotage this anymore because you really want this.
You say to yourself that you're gonna follow your 'plan' for your weight loss.

And then...
Later that week (or even later that day!) ---> You overeat. YOU EMOTIONALLY OVEREAT & YOU SABOTAGE YOUR DESIRED WEIGHT LOSS, YET AGAIN.

I understand this emotionally draining and viscous cycle all-too well, because I lived in it for 2 decades. I know it first hand. IT'S EXHAUSTING.

But that’s actually the good news!

HERE’S WHY: When you buy those magazines last minute at the grocery store as you’re checking out (Oh, I KNOW. Been there. DONE THAT), the ones that say on the cover ‘Tips to lose weight this Holiday Season’... the problem is that these kinds of articles in magazines and ‘special segments’ on the news, typically focus on ONE thing:

→ THE ACTIONS.

They focus on telling you ‘what’ to do ( what NOT to do, what to eat, what NOT to eat, when to do it, how often, how much, how little, etc).

The thing about HUMANS is that the decisions we make are not determined by having information about ‘what to do’ → our decisions are driven by our emotions. The things we want to feel or NOT feel.

Let’s go another layer deep into our human behavior:

Our emotions are determined by how we’re thinking about things (ie. HOW YOU’RE THINKING about food, about your weight loss, about your body, about the Holiday).

REAL- LIFE HOLIDAY EXAMPLE-

...Let’s say you’re stressed about Thanksgiving, and you’re already DREADING all the social interactions. PLUS you’re also feeling anxious because you know there’s gonna be TONS of food around and you don’t wanna F-up your weight loss progress. (not to mention, your family are HARDCORE food pushers)...

...Let’s say you ALSO think about food as a way to ‘take-the-edge-off’...

→ If there’s ALL THIS going on for you, It doesn’t matter if you ‘KNOW’ the ‘tip’ about bringing your own healthy holiday dish to the family potluck that you read in Cosmo earlier that week - because if you’re feeling THIS emotionally charged and food is your go-to (plus maybe also some wine ;) ...

Then you’re still gonna end up EMOTIONALLY eating stuff that doesn’t support your weight loss goals (Yes, even though you ‘know’ all the ‘tips’ and you ‘know’ exactly WHAT to eat).THIS IS EXACTLY why in my LAST 10 program and on my podcast I don’t do ‘tips-n-tricks’.

Instead, we go to the CORE of it, which is equipping you with brain and emotional self care tools. (I’m ALL about EMPOWERING YOU sister!).Instead, we bring awareness to decondition limiting beliefs and ways of thinking so that you can ACTUALLY make the decisions that will create the results you’re wanting, while ALSO feeling the way you actually want to FEEL in your life when it comes to your weight loss, body image, and food.

You’ve heard sooo many of my clients share their stories on the podcast, you’ve read about their transformations and how they rave about their experience.

You’ve literally heard it in their voices as they share...
THEY FEEL EMPOWERED, LIBERATED FROM THE STRUGGLE, AND LOVING THEIR RESULTS.

If you pay close attention, you’ll see that a consistent common denominator is this:
THEY’VE LEARNED THE SKILL OF SELF-COMPASSION.

→ They’ve learned how to be kind to themselves, and actually supportive OF themselves >>>  which is the TOTAL OPPOSITE of what most of us learn as women: to be constantly critical and ‘never good enough’.

I’ve talked about emotional eating MANY times on the podcast, but today we’re zero-ing in on a really important one, that deserves its very own episode: SELF PITY.

I can’t even tell you HOW MANY TIMES I emotionally over-ate and sabotaged my goals DUE TO FEELING SELF PITY.

Self pity about my weight, self pity about my body, self pity about relationship stuff, work stuff (the list goes on!)… or even just self pity about my life in general. And whenever I felt this way, I didn’t know any other thing to do, but to eat about it as a temporary means for distraction.

THIS is the case for most women. It completely explains WHY it’s possible for someone to know exactly ‘what to do’ to lose the weight, but then emotionally eat to the point of even regaining all the weight they’ve lost. Because when it comes to emotions like this one, we just haven’t known any other way... UNTIL NOW ;)

I can remember SO CLEARLY moments of my life where I TRULY felt and believe that:
 -Food was the only ‘good thing’ in my life.
- Food (specifically, popcorn at the end of the day…) was the ONLY thing to ‘look forward to’.This is something that comes up A LOT as I’m coaching my clients inside THE LAST 10 Program.

One of the skills you’ve heard me talk about before (but I break down in this episode in a new way) is: EMOTIONAL COURAGE.

In this Episode I specifically examine Self-pity as part of our human emotional experience- HOW to navigate that. We take an even  closer, microscopic look at Self-Pity vs Self-Compassion, and moreover HOW TO ACTUALLY OFFER YOURSELF COMPASSION IN YOUR MOST CHALLENGING MOMENTS as a wayyyyy more effective strategy. (pro tip: Self-compassion is a powerful antidote for self-sabotage!)

For me, Compassion is like being able to offer LOVE from myself TO MYSELF in moments when I’m feeling MOST uncomfortably challenged. HAVING THIS SKILL CHANGED THE COURSE OF MY LIFE. (not to mention, I also stopped rage eating which means I now maintain an 80 pound weight loss with ease, and joy and love...)

I share a personal example and story from when I navigated being a brand new mom, and that infamous newborn stage. It was one of the HARDEST things I’ve ever done, it involved BOTH self-pity AND compassion.

The game-changer was honing in on the difference between the two, developing the ability to generate self-compassion FOR YOURSELF, while also allowing for some self-pity as needed.

So… if you find yourself feeling like ‘food is the only thing to look forward to’ at the end of your day, your week, or overall right now in your life-

The majority of my clients come to me because they are just at a loss for how to stop emotionally eating and overeating in a way that sabotages their goals and desired results.

Women ALL around the world internally struggle with emotional eating and sabotage.

Here’s how it goes down:
You were planning to 'eat healthy' or 'follow your diet' but then... you eat an Oreo.

Next thing you know, you've spent the rest of the night eating the full package of Oreos.After having eaten all the Oreos, you overeat and sabotage all weekend long. :thinking_face:You think to yourself:
'Ugh. I did it again. I'll start over and be really 'on plan' AFTER that...'

The reason I know exactly how this goes down, is because THIS was one of the cycles I was stuck in for decades. I've also coached HUNDREDS of women, from ALL walks of life on this exact overeating pattern.

Believe it or not, the cycle I've described here is fueled by: (drum roll please....) PERFECTIONISM.

I know this doesn't 'sound' like Perfectionism. (And in fact, you're likely thinking this doesn't even apply to you because YOU see yourself as being  FAR FROM PERFECT. )Here's the wild thing though:
Perfectionism is a way of thinking.

'Perfectionism' doesn't actually mean 'being perfect'. :exploding_head:

When it comes to weight loss and weight struggles, perfectionism rears its little head by leading you to believe that in order to be 'done' struggling with your weight: YOU NEED TO BE 'PERFECT' and you'll need to 'eat perfectFOREVER.

FOR-E-VER. (ugh. I'm exhausted just thinking about 'being perfect' forever.)

One of the MOST common questions I get is - Brenda ‘HOW DO I STOP OVEREATING AND SABOTAGING MY GOALS?!’

In order to ‘stop’ it’s important to first understand what’s driving the overeating and sabotage...

:arrow_right: THE CAUSE OF OVEREATING IN THIS WAY IS: PERFECTIONISTIC THINKING.
